QUICK FACTS

Grimes, a northwest suburb of Des Moines, has grown like a weed over the past 10 years but still maintains the feel of a small town. With all the amenities a person could want a short drive away, a charming Main Street, and farm field borders, it’s not hard to see why so many have flocked to the area in recent years.

Population: 16,295 (2022 estimation), nearly double the amount from 2010 (8,412)

Some notable businesses found in Grimes include: Beisser Lumber, Toyota of Des Moines, FedEx (distribution center), Hicklin Powersports , Canoyer Garden Center, Bentley Ridge Tree Center, and so many more!  Grimes is home to massive Hy-Vee that sits at the corner of Highway 141 and 1st Street. At the time of construction it was the largest store Hy-Vee had built (93,000+ Square Feet).

Fun fact – Grimes “skyline” is made up of not one but TWO water towers, which stand side by side.

Along with Dallas Center, most of Grimes makes up the Dallas Center Grimes School District (DCG). Some areas of Grimes feeds into the Johnston Community School District. DCG Schools offer a unique Optional Kindergarten (OK for short) program for children who are old enough for Kindergarten but may need an extra year to develop the skills necessary to thrive in full day kindergarten. DCG’s mascot is the Mustang and their colors are red and white!
